Ricardo Hamdan of Hitachi Zosen Inova Wins Biogas Champion Award
Canadian Biogas Association honors contributions to the growing biogas industry
The Canadian Biogas Association has recognized the outstanding contributions to the Canadian biogas industry during its Biogas East Conference, with the Biogas Champion award given to Hitachi Zosen Inova’s Ricardo Hamdan.
Toronto, Ontario – Ricardo Hamdan, an employee of Hitachi Zosen Inova and an expert in the Canadian biogas industry, has been awarded the Biogas Champion Award by the Canadian Biogas Association (CBA).
Contribution to Canada’s Sustainability Efforts
The award recognizes Hamdan’s contributions to advancing the biogas industry in the country, particularly through his involvement in providing technology solutions for some of the most emblematic projects in Canada, including the Surrey Biofuel Facility in British Columbia, St. Hyacinthe Facility in Quebec, and the Stormfisher Facility in London, Ontario.
“I am humbled and grateful to have been recognized by my peers and awarded the Biogas Champion Award,” said Ricardo Hamdan. “However, I want to emphasize that this accomplishment would not have been possible without the exceptional collaboration from colleagues, clients, and partners who contribute to the growing biogas industry every day.”
Hamdan has been advocating for policies at many levels of government to promote sustainable practices in the Canadian biogas industry. The award was presented by Jennifer Green, the Executive Director of the CBA, during a ceremony held in Toronto end of April 2023.

Hamdan’s award marks a significant achievement for Hitachi Zosen Inova and its ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability in the biogas industry. Heath Jones, HZI’s Managing Director for North America, expressed his congratulations to Hamdan and the entire team at Hitachi Zosen Inova. “We are proud of Ricardo’s outstanding achievement.” said Jones. “His leadership and expertise, as well as the team’s continuous efforts, have been invaluable in driving our success in the Canadian biogas industry and in deploying reliable renewable gas infrastructure in North America.”
Important Player in North America’s Biogas Industry
HZI’s North American Group has realized numerous biogas projects in recent years across the US and Canada. In addition, the company has been operating its own dry anaerobic digestion plant in San Luis Obispo, California, since 2014. This facility processes up to 36,500 tonnes of organic waste annually and generates around 6,321,000 kWh of electricity from it.
Most recently the company has been awarded the contract to design, supply and install an integrated renewable gas plant consisting of a 648,000 gal/day Wet Anaerobic Digester Amine Biogas Upgrader System and integrated process piping and controls for a large distillery in Kentucky, USA.
HZI has recently opened its new Canadian main office in Montreal, Quebec to support the province’s commitment to bio energies including green hydrogen and renewable gas.
