In autumn 2015 the Swedish government set the ambitious goal of being one of the first industrialised nations to do entirely without fossil fuels. An important component of the nationwide decarbonisation strategy is switching from petrol and diesel to green fuels for public transport. This is precisely where the dry fermentation and biogas upgrading plant in Jönköping comes in. Recycled organic waste is converted into bio-CNG using dry fermentation and subsequent gas upgrading. Local bus companies and transport companies use this bio-CNG to fuel their fleets. The plant is HZI’s first DBOO (design, build, own and operate) project in Europe; HZI owns the plant and took charge of design, construction and operation.
