Modular Plant Technology Tailored to Individual Circumstances and Performance Requirements
HZI BioMethan delivers gas upgrading facilities that can also be built as an expansion of existing plants. They treat and upgrade biogenic gases such as biogas, sewage and landfill gas, as well as flue gases. Depending on their infrastructure, operators can choose between a physical and chemical process. We also offer optional technologies to enable the upgraded gases to be processed further.
Heat-driven process for separating carbon dioxide
HZI delivers first-class gas upgrading systems based on pressureless chemical amine scrubbing, a particularly efficient and reliable heat-driven process. High-quality scrubbing fluid ensures process stability and plant efficiency, resulting in exceptionally high system performance and availability.
Characteristics of amine scrubbing:
- Operates with any waste heat source
- Methane purity of up to 99.5% vol
- Minimal methane slip (max. 0.1% vol)
- High product gas purity means the gas can be injected into any natural gas grid
- Robust plant design for greater biogas quantity
Pressure-driven process for separating carbon dioxide
To enable our customers to choose the process that best suits their needs, we also offer membrane technology – a pressure-driven process for upgrading biogas – in addition to amine scrubbing. Here the carbon dioxide is separated using membranes made from high-performance polyamides, specially designed by Evonik for upgrading facilities, and offering high permeability and selectivity.

Separating CO2 from Flue Gases Using Heat-Driven Amine Scrubbing
In the process of industrial incineration, the pressureless amine scrubbing process can also be used to separate the CO2 from flue gases by using the waste heat produced in upstream incineration to efficiently regenerate the scrubbing solution. These systems also boast high availability and performance, and minimize the amount of CO2 remaining in the flue gases. This not only improves a company’s climate footprint, the high-purity carbon dioxide can also be used as a product gas for certain applications.

Injection Technology (+Grid)
Biomethane injection into any natural gas infrastructure
With our +Grid add-on, we have developed injection systems that can reliably address the requirements of network operators. The gases upgraded for injection into the natural gas grid are measured to determine the quantity and quality and compressed to the corresponding pressure. The gas quality is adjusted precisely to the network level using liquid gas or air, and odorized depending on the pressure stage. Operators also profit from our extensive expertise in interfacing to upstream processes.

Filling Station Technology (+CNG)
BioCNG filling stations with a flexible installation concept
Our +CNG technology is a filling station concept for fueling natural gas-driven vehicles, and is designed for enterprises producing their own biogas or gas from sewage or landfill. Following upgrading using Membrane Technology or Amine Scrubbing, the gas is compressed to up to 300 bar, the storage pressure of a filling station, and temporarily stored. Once the gas has been odorized, vehicles can be filled up via an autofuel terminal with an integrated volume measurement system. The storage capacity is set in line with the requirements of the vehicles to be served.

CO2 Liquefaction (+CO2)
CO2 liquefaction for variable use of product gas
Fertilizer, fire extinguishers, dry ice, disco fog – there’s no end to the potential uses of carbon dioxide. In liquid form, it can be transported more effectively, stored, and put to use. In addition to carbon capture and biogas upgrading, we also offer +CO2, a range of liquefaction solutions. Secondary gas substances are removed, and the gas is liquefied using low-temperature cooling to make it transportable, storable, and ready for use.
